About Becky Birchett-Allen

Horn Teacher | Private Piano Teacher | Freelance Musician
Becky Allen, red‑headed French horn player in Charlottesville Virginia performing.

Becky Allen is a dedicated musician, educator, and wellness enthusiast whose life has been shaped by a lifelong love of music and teaching.

Becky began playing piano in 2nd grade, training classically with Beverly Taysom and Carolyn Riggins in Tempe, Arizona. During high school she earned superior ratings in NFSM and Arizona Interscholastic Association competitions, receiving awards for outstanding piano study and performance. As an adult she continued her studies with Content Sablinsky and Dian Selheim.

She picked up French horn in 5th grade, studying under Larry Conrad and later attending prestigious programs including Interlochen Arts Camp and Kendall Betts Horn Camp, where she worked with master horn artists Kendall Betts and Barry Tuckwell. Her high school performance highlights include two National Honor Bands: the John Philip Sousa National Honors Band in Washington, D.C., and the National Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall.

Becky graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Arizona State University, concentrating in French horn and music theory under William Lane and John Ericson, and studied with Nancy Sullivan at Northern Arizona University. She has performed professionally with the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra and the Charlottesville Symphony Orchestra, and currently performs with The Charlottesville Band, founded the Cville Horn Ensemble, and freelances throughout Central Virginia. Locally, she’s often recognized as the red‑headed French horn player in Charlottesville, a phrase that reflects her long‑standing presence in regional ensembles.

Becky began teaching private lessons in 1998 as a junior in high school, continuing to teach throughout her college years. Since 2007 she has offered private piano and French horn lessons in the Charlottesville, Virginia area, serving students of all ages and skill levels — from absolute beginners to advanced musicians. In 2019 she expanded her reach by launching Successful Private Music Studios, a website offering online courses, tools, and resources to help music teachers build successful and thriving private studios.

Outside of music, Becky is a NASM-certified personal trainer and nutritionist with a passion for health and wellness. She has completed multiple races, including the Disney Princess Half Marathon — at 29 weeks pregnant with her second child. Through her blog Connect the Dots Ginger, she encourages others to pursue their own fitness goals.

Becky lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her husband Matthew and their three children.
